Setting Goals to Help You on Your Weight Loss Program
By Kevin E Graham

The vast majority of people want to lose weight – it’s a fact. Just look at how gym memberships jump in January as countless people get started on their weight loss programs. But it can often be hard to stick with a plan if you don’t know what you’re aiming for. That’s why it is important to visualize the end result and set yourself some goals to reach for. It’s easy to open a celebrity magazine or see your favorite actor or actress and think that you want to look exactly like them, but this is not a realistic goal. People come in all shapes and sizes; tall, short, broad, petite; and because of this, the best way to succeed at weight loss is to look at your own body when setting a goal.

Have a positive body image, and know what weight will suit your height and frame. A short woman who weighs 130lbs might look too heavy, but on a taller woman, this might be too thin. A useful tool than can be used here is a height to weight ratio chart. Type this phrase into a search engine and you will easily find one. This will allow you to use your height as a guide and will give you the weight range for obese, overweight, healthy and underweight. Your goal weight should be within the healthy weight range.

Now that you have your goal weight, you know what you are aiming for. But if you have a lot to lose it may seem like too much effort. This is the point where a lot of people give up. The thing to remember is that you didn’t put on the weight overnight and you won’t lose it overnight either. But with hard work it will come off eventually. Setting mini goals will help you here. Think about trying to lose 100lbs – it seems daunting, doesn’t it? Now, break it into ten sets of 10lbs – suddenly that big problem just got a whole lot smaller. Focus on the first 10lbs and don’t let the rest of the weight even cross your mind. When you get the first 10 off, then you can look at the next 10. Dividing your weight loss program into these types of segments will ensure you have lasting results.

A great way to focus your mind on your goal is to use a reward system. You’ve worked hard at your weight loss, so of course you deserve to treat yourself. But reaching for that tub of ice cream will just undo all of your hard work. Instead, why not go for a facial or buy a new dress? If you pick your reward and aim for it, it will give you extra motivation to reach your goal.
